These courses are free (including text and CD-ROMs). However, the participants are still responsible for any fees resulting from the use of PCs and the Internet at their homes or places of employment, as well as any transportation fees to access the JICA Satellite Center. JICA-NET Rm, 4th floor, NEC Bldg. UP Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines. If you are from the province, you will have to come down to UP Diliman for the live interactive video conference at least twice for the duration of the course.
Soon after the application deadline, applicants will be notified by e-mail as to whether or not they were accepted. If the number of applicants exceeds the 60-student limit, the conditions of each applicant will be considered in choosing which of them will be accepted. Text and CD-ROMs will also be sent to the participants.
Participants that achieve a certain level of academic achievement, based on the content of their submitted assignments and their test scores, will be presented with a certificate of completion issued by JICA.
ACCEPTANCE FOR TRAINING MODULE 2 (Build your own network) STATUS:CLOSED
JICA training Module 2 course title Build Your Own Network
JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) is conducting a “Computer Engineer Course” using the JICA Net e-learning functions. The aim of the course is to develop computer engineers and users in the Philippines. JICA is now in the process of recruiting participants for the “Network Literacy Course”, explained below, which is part of this “Computer Engineer Course”.
Requirements to take the course
Requirements for module 2 (Build your own network)
The participant must already have at least a basic understanding of how to operate PCs and use Web browsers, including the use of e-mail. It is desirable for participants to have a basic knowledge of TCP/IP, network and operation of Windows environment. The participants must have access to a PC connected to the Internet (including those at the Satellite Center). A PC with Celeron500M and memory of at least 128M is recommended (this is the minimum requirement but a faster machine is definitely better). This is because the CD-ROMs include animations and simulations. Participants must also have their own e-mail addresses. An activity in the course requires 2 PC’s connected to each other, and participants are allowed to change the network setting and to install a server program. If a participant can only use one PC, all the course contents will not be covered. However, JICA can accept this condition)
The aim of this course it to provide those that want to be computer and software engineers, as well as those that manage networks for their company or organizations, with practical knowledge and techniques regarding networks and the Internet. Participants need to build a small network system and servers with their own PCs.
1. Network and Server -- This lesson provides an outline of the network known as the Internet. The Internet consists of infrastructure, services, servers, clients and protocols. The client uses the service that is provided by the server. Infrastructure such as network cables and routers are placed between the client and the server and packets go through the infrastructure according to the protocol. Internet services bring us many benefits. The most popular services are WWW and E-mail. In this lesson, we will learn how to prepare a server machine and configure TCP/IP protocol.
2. The Internet Server -- In this lesson we will learn the basic mechanisms of World Wide Web (WWW). Then, we will install a web server and learn the basic elements for configuring a practical web server. A personal web server or Internet information server is used for the web server.
This course mainly involves self-learning using text and CD-ROMs. During the training, mentors will provide guidance over the Internet, and the participants can also use e-mail to present their assignments. After completing the self-study, there will be three follow-up lectures from Japan using a TV conferencing system.
(1) Self-learning Period: October 2 ~ October 31 (a total of 20 hours of self-learning is assumed) Location: At the participant’s home or place of work (where PC can be used with access to the Internet). The PCs at the JICA Net Satellite Center of The University of the Philippines can be used for this purpose.
2) Remote Lectures Time: Oct. 12 (Thu) and Mon., Oct. 27(Wed); between 2:30 and 5:00 in the afternoon in all cases Location: JICA Net Satellite Center (University of the Philippines) Supplemental: Those participants that live outside of Manila, or may have trouble participating in the remote lectures because of work, should contact the course administrator beforehand to make alternative arrangements.
ACCEPTANCE FOR TRAINING MODULE 5 (Database Essentials) STATUS: Closed
ICA training Module 5 course title Database Essentials
Requirements to take the course
Requirements for module 5 (Database Essentials):
The participants must already have at least a basic understanding of how to operate PCs and use Web browsers, including the use of e-mail. It is desirable for participants to have a basic knowledge of Microsoft Office. The participants must have access to a PC connected to the Internet (including those at the Satellite Center). Participants must also have their own e-mail addresses. An activity in the course requires Microsoft Access.
The aim of this course it to provide those that want to be computer and software engineers, as well as those that develop a application or system with database system for their company or organizations, with practical knowledge and techniques regarding database. Participants need to develop a small database application using Microsoft Access.
(1) Database and SQL This lesson provides an outline of database system and programming. What is a database? What is DBMS? SQL language and data manipulation Normalization for table optimization Transaction process
(2) Database Application In this lesson, we will learn how to develop a database application. Actually, you will make small database application using Microsoft Access. Analysis and ER (Entity-Relationship) model Table and program design Access programming SQL programming
